Both athletes are facing a tough decision between baseball and D1-NCAA Baseball
Bradenton, FL- Max Foody and Alfredo Escalera were selected by the San Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals, respectively, in the 2012 MLB First Year Player Draft. Both players were members of the IMG Baseball program an elite baseball powerhouse in Bradenton, Florida.
Max Foody a former left-handed pitcher from Ponte Vedra HS, played as a designated hitter and was able to contribute to the 2010 successful Ponte Vedras team’s season, which ended in the state semifinals. Foody transfered to IMG Academy in Bradenton following his sophomore season with the intention to concentrate on his pitching. Foody was named a Perfect Game Underclass First Team All-American and a Top Florida Prospect by ESPN-HS among other accolades.
Foody is a tough athlete who worked himself out a shoulder illness last season and came back strong for the 2012 varsity season. He has been using his 6’4’’ 230-pound body to overpower top hitters in Florida, Arizona and California where he has competed and made it easier for IMG’s team to secure very comfortable leads” said Escalera about his former teammate.
Foody has an excellent physical build with remarkable strength. He has shown a somewhat back turn delivery associated with a smooth and swift arm. His fastball has touched 94 mph in various events, which he alternates with a hammer curveball.
He will now face the challenge of putting in a balance his college opportunity at D1 Florida State University and his pro-baseball opportunity at St. Louis.
On the other hand, the Royals selected Alfredo Escalera in their search for the ideal players to inject speed, defense and batting talent to their organization. Escalera is an extremely athletic player and has the ability to play any outfield or infield position. “Escalera has a high degree of overall athleticism, with above-average speed, arm strength, and bat speed, as well as very good overall actions. He also has a professional baseball skills foundation from his four years of IMG experience. He is a young high school graduate with a high ceiling and bright future.” said IMG’s Baseball Program Director Ken Bolek. Escalera has a commitment to attend D1 Stetson University a very strong academic and baseball college located in DeLand, Florida.
“Alfredo’s makeup is off the charts,” IMG’s varsity coach Jason Elias said about Escalera. “He is a stand out guy who’s presence picks everyone up. Alfredo is a member of the National Honor Society and works very hard in the classroom from an academic perspective. It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with and get to know Alfredo over the last four years as his coach.”
