Escalera finished strong his pre-draft preparation

“After so many years, I am ready to face the next level”

Bradenton, FL- Alfredo Escalera’s love for the game of baseball started early in his life. When he was 2 years old, he was given a set of plastic golf clubs so he could start practicing with them.  According to Escalera, instinctively he started swinging the golf clubs as a baseball bat.  “The rest is history; I’ve been playing ever since.  So, I don’t know exactly when I realized that baseball was going to be so important in my life, but it seems to me that I have been dreaming about playing baseball all my life”, said Escalera in an interview earlier this year.

During his initial developmental steps in baseball, he joined the Encantada Baseball Club, the Roosevelt Baseball Club in his native Puerto Rico and later the IMG Baseball Academy in Florida. His training has been constant and uninterrupted which has giving Escalera the endurance and ability to help him excel. “ My preparation for the draft really began in Roosevelt Baseball Club and then when my family decided to move to Florida so I could enhance my possibilities”, said Escalera.

At the early age of 9, Alfredo started to train with a specialized physical trainer and a speed trainer on top of his regular baseball practices. After an invitation to attend a summer camp at IMG and attending those camps in three consecutive years, Alfredo was invited to attend the IMG Baseball full-time program, which he did starting at 13 years old in the 9th grade.

The practice and training during those years were very intense. “My routine started at 7 am for the academic aspect of my development and then continued at about one in the afternoon until about 6:30 [PM] for the baseball part” described Escalera. As part of the program he was exposed to mental conditioning program, media management training, physical conditioning and nutritional orientation among many other important aspects of the life of a complete athlete.

“One of the most important things about my training, was the exposure to a high level of competition” said Escalera, who throughout his development played against teams in San Juan, Atlanta, Arizona and many of the strongest baseball programs across Florida. Alfredo faced the toughest competition during his senior year after attending the Baseball Factory All-American tournament in Tucson Arizona, the PG World Showcase, the Sarasota Baseball Classic and the Horizon Classic in Phoenix. “I did pretty well in these competitions, since I batted .477 and had no defensive errors, but still the competition was amazing” confirmed Escalera who was named Sarasota Classic MVP after having two walk-off hits during the tournament including a wining homerun during the championship game.

Alfredo ended up with a high school career batting average of .439 including his outings during the summer with the Palomino League in Puerto Rico (2010) and the Florida Bombers in Miami, Florida (2011). According to the scouting report published by Perfect Game after the Southeast Top Prospect Showcase, Alfredo presented as a “3B/SS with a 6-0 175 lb. frame from Bradenton, FL who attends IMG Academy. [Alfredo has a] Loose angular live-bodied build, [with] room to get stronger. Very good present bat speed, swing is short and crisp, quick hands, low tension swing, loose easy extension out front, looks to pull, ball jumps hard, has power potential, tends to reach outside, high level hitting tools. 6.59 runner, smooth easy actions to the ball, quick feet, shows range and balance, soft hands, solid arm strength, tends to be tentative on his throws at times, needs to let it go.”

Alfredo is a complete person with a strong academic performance demonstrated after graduating from the IMG Pendleton School with a 3.8 GPA and a solid moral standards backed by his strong religious believes and family values. Alfredo is committed to attend the business school at D1 Stetson University where he is expected to play centerfield during his freshmen year depending on the MLB’s First Year Player Draft results.
